Coatings for Extreme Applications
Thanks to their robust coatings, high-temperature single-mode fibers can withstand temperatures of up to 150°C and more. They also withstand other extreme environmental factors such as high pressure, liquids, and chemicals. They are therefore used in pressure monitoring, data transmission, and monitoring in the oil, gas, and chemical industries.
Dual-Band Carbon-Coated SM Fibers
For demanding applications, Fibercore has developed hermetic carbon coatings that prevent water, acid, and other liquids from penetrating the fiber core. Various additional materials ensure that the optical fibers are not affected by temperatures of up to 150°C (acrylate) or 300°C (polyimides).
The carbon cladding also protects the core from mechanical damage and guarantees a long lifetime even in the event of severe bending. Nevertheless, it can be removed quickly and easily for processing with standard tools.
SM Fibers with a High-Temperature Acrylate Coating
A coating made of high-temperature acrylate ensures that these single-mode fibers can be used permanently at temperatures of up to +150°C. The fibers can be used in a wide range of applications. Versions with different mode-field diameters ensure the best performance for specific applications. The bending loss can be influenced by selecting the numerical aperture.
SM1500(9/125)HAT has a particularly low attenuation as required for power transmission or distribution in fiber optic sensor systems. Due to the high cut-off wavelength, the bending losses are significantly lower than those of standard telecom fibers.
With mode-field diameters of 6.3 μm and 7.8 μm, the macro and micro bending losses are particularly low. At the same time, these fiber optic cables feature higher backscattering coefficients for Raman, Rayleigh, and Brillouin sensor systems. They can be easily spliced with small MFD sensor coil fibers with a high NA and are therefore often used as “bridging fibers” in acoustic sensors.
SM Fibers with a Polyimide Coating
Bending-resistant single-mode fibers with a polyimide coating are suitable for continuous operation up to 300°C. They can withstand peak temperatures of up to 400°C for short periods of time. These fiber optic cables are available with numerical apertures of between 0.13 and 0.31. Single-mode fibers with a low NA have low attenuation losses across long distances. A high NA means that only low bending losses occur even when rolled up.
Application Examples:
- Microseismic fracking sensors
- FBG fibers for stress and temperature sensors
